After 12 or so years of waiting, Mike finally drew a limited entry Elk Permit. The hunt both he and I applied for was the Late Season hunt on the Indian Peaks Unit. Five more months of scouting, planning, and waiting the hunt finally arrived. Mike and Paul headed down a few days earlier than the rest of us, so they could get a couple more days of scouting in before opening day.
In true Painter fashion, we had a great time.
In the picture above, Chase wanted to participate in "No Shave November".
One of Mike's friends from school let us camp on his property on the mountain. This picture was taken about 10 feet out the front door of the trailer. Many thanks to Jason and his family for letting us invade and for being such great hosts!
One of the areas we found some nice bulls was several miles from camp. Instead of going back to the trailer for a few minutes, we ended up spending some time resting on the mountain. The spots in the shade were coveted, so I made certain everyone was comfortable before I ventured out of my spot to grab this picture.
Mike saw this nice bull from about a mile away and it took us all some time to get into position for the shot. Once Mike found him in the cross hairs, we knew he would be going home with us. After we all made it to the downed animal (and several swear words by Clinton) we celebrated and took a bunch of pictures. But then the work really began.
Always one of my favorite pictures is the hunter packing out his trophy.
I have to admit, this was one of my favorite hunting trips, we had such a great time. I know this post is a little plain as I am not going deep into the details, but trust me when I say, I had a great time. I was so excited for Mike being able to fill his tag and with such a great bull. I don't think I could have been any more excited had it been my success.
