Last week, while I was outside of the office shoveling snow, I noticed a gentleman walking towards me. In the distance he looked quite tall and I could tell that he was bundled up. As he neared I said to him "Good Morning!" I could hear a muffled reply, but was not really certain what he said. So, in an effort to continue conversation with him I said: "It's pretty cold" (Obviously since it was snowing). His reply was: "Just one more thing in my screwed up life. Life sucks!" I went to say something else, but as he continued walking right past me, I realized he was probably not in the mood for conversation.
Well, it has been several days and this brief exchange has weighed heavily on my mind. I have felt sorrow for him, if that is what he truly believes. I know we all have bad days, bad weeks, bad months, heck sometimes I look back and think: "Yeah, that whole year kind of stunk". But I can honestly say, for me life does not suck. Oh anyway, I have digressed. Sorry.
Anyway, as I have thought about that "Conversation" I have wondered what can I do to help make his life better? I don't know him and I don't even know his name. I see him around quite a bit, generally I see him and another gentleman riding their bikes around town, but I don't know him or his situation. Next time I see him, do I invite him into the office for a cup of hot chocolate and some conversation? Maybe he just wants to be left alone? Maybe he was just having a bad day and it might be best if I do nothing? Do I just say hi to him again and introduce myself? Anyway; I don't know where I am heading with this post. This is just something I have thought about multiple times the last several days now and I guess I just needed to tell someone about it. But if you are local and know him and/or his situation and you want to share with me ways I can help him, please let me know.
