Today, while making some cookies, I realized that I didn't have quite enough sugar. I thought about running to the store and buying some. I put that thought out of my mind, because I knew that had another bag in the house. I searched high and low, without success. I finally decided to just call my mother and ask her if I could borrow a cup of sugar. Once I hung-up the phone I started laughing. I wondered to myself "who does this?" I don't ever remember calling people to borrow a cup of sugar. It seems like you hear of that quite a bit, but I never really believed it. Now you can consider me a believer. I walked into my parent's house and my mother asked me what I was making? I told her that I was making Raisin Cookies. (You anti-raisinites can just keep your mouths shut.) She asked me what recipe, I said "yours". She told me that it was really Grandma Painter's recipe. Which I think I already knew. Then she told me that Grandma Painter got the recipe from her mom, so it was really Great-Grandma Sperry's recipe. This was new news to me.
Great-Grandma has been on my mind a bit lately. I guess it is because I ran across a picture of her the other day. This reminded me of what a remarkable lady she was. Well into the later years of her life, she still kept a spotless home and an immaculate yard filled with the most amazing irises. She was a very caring and compassionate person.
I got back home and finished making the cookies. This was probably the best batch of raisin cookies I have ever made. Not certain if it was because I now know it was my Great-Grandma's recipe, because I borrowed a cup of sugar, or there was some other reason it tasted better. Regardless of the reason they were delicious.

What a great story - best cookies every (and that's coming from someone who doesn't like raisins.)
The handed down recipes are my very favorite! The cookies look great! Thanks for sharing this story
