Oh what a mess

Last week I ventured into Best Buy and walked out with a new computer. This was an intentional purchase, for a few months now I had been looking at computers on-line, asking for friend's opinions, and taking a few for "test runs". But I am digressing from the original intent of this post.

Once I got my computer home and on my lap, one of the first items of business was to download iTunes and subsequently upload my iTunes library. I plugged in the hard drive and the song count immediately started climbing, and climbing, and climbing. When I moved my library off my old computer I had only about 4,900 songs. For some reason my library now consisted of 13,987 songs. Apparently, I had copied my iTunes library a few different times.
When I realized the problem, I started the work of cleaning up my music. It only took me about 4 days to clean it up. Throughout this process, I wondered where some of the music came from. Did I really have Lawrence Welk? (Yes, but it was a Christmas album which something in my mind tells me it is okay.) What bothered me even more was that I have more Michael Bolton songs than I did Michael Buble or even Michael Jackson. I honestly still wonder who sabotaged my library and put Michael Bolton songs on it? I have no memory of committing such a heinous crime. Some of the other things I learned--I probably have enough Beatles, but could still use a few Paul McCartney songs. I have more Fleetwood Mac and Elvis than I thought I had, but I don't have as much Chicago as I think I should. Some of the songs came through with just a Track # and I realized that sometimes I can't tell the difference (or maybe remember correctly) if a song was Genesis or if it was Phil Collins solo. I am impressed with the number of contemporary songs I have, and I think it would be interesting to find the true ratio between the numbers of Pop/Rock/Classical/Country/etc. songs.
I won't bore you with whatever else I have learned or forgotten about, but just so you can all rest at ease. My songs are back into the 5,000 area and I am once again enjoying my iTunes, so we can all rest at ease, at least for tonight.

I wish you luck with your cleanup. I'm still working on it after switching to a mac over 18 months ago. I'm getting close to 12000 songs and it drives me crazy that my collection isn't orderly.
