As long as I can remember. On the Corner of Main Street and Track Street in Nephi has sat The Colonial Manor. Below is a picture from what I believe is April 2000.
While growing up "The Manor" as everyone called it, was a nursing home. Where some of the most interesting, entertaining, and scary people lived. Uncle Earl walked up and down Main Street, telling everyone about Poca-telly Ideeho. If you gave him too much attention he would tell you the story about the monkey and the baboon playing in the grass.
On the northeast corner of the building was a rotating sign that would show the time of day and the temperature. This was in the late 70's and early 80's. Which was big-time for our little community. I remember hot summer days driving by it and see the temperature in the triple digits.
It was an huge building. When it was first opened, I believe it was called the Forest Hotel. I am not certain of the exact time it was built. Late 30's early 40's? Some of my mom's sisters worked at the Forest. I have seen a picture or two of The Manor in the early years. It was a remarkable adn beautiful building.
But the last few years it has fallen into a state of disrepair. It was falling apart and was becoming a danger. Well, this past week I had heard the news, but still had not seen it. Then Wednesday morning on my way to work, I took a little detour just to see for myself. When I saw what was in front of me, I actually physically gasped. It was gone. I stared in dis-belief at the strange sight. I think it was strange because something I had seen and known my whole life was gone. It took me a minute to process. But I know it is for the good, it was dangerous. Now, it can make way for something new and better!
