Just a litte more civil

Recently I was home sick and the following story ran on the news.

Mayor Ralph Becker, Lt. Gov. Greg Bell launch campaign to be more civil

Initially, as I started listening to the story I wondered to myself: "Is this really necessary?" I didn't come up with an answer immediately, but over the course of the last few days I have discussed with a few friends and then after the Arizona tragedy over the weekend, the answer is a resounding YES!

People are becomming increasingly rude. I mentioned to one of my friends that I think the reason people are more rude, is because tact is just too doggone hard. We as a people have given up on trying to say things politely or even being nice. Another of my friends mentioned it is because people are more sarcastic now and sarcastic is funny. Sadly, I think she might be correct as well.

What are your thoughts? Are we more rude now that we were 20 years ago? Do we need to have a civility campaign? Have we gone too far?

For my part, I am going to be a nicer person. Maybe if we all make a small effort to be nicer we can see a larger impact in the long run.
