Memorial Day 2010

It has taken me some time to write this one, I knew I should have written the day it happened or it would take me forever to get back here.

This was a very memorable Memorial Day for me. Each year on Memorial Day American Legion Post #1 Nephi does a memorial day program at the local cemeteries. I have wanted to attend in the past but have never quite made it. This year I decided that I was going to attend. I was not disappointed.

I watched the color guard march up:

The speakers were amazing, as they reminded all of us that those of us that love America are patriots. There were two musical duets and the Post Chaplain read the names of all of those Veterans interred at each cemetery.

The flag at half staff was humbling.

The raising of the flag was very moving, and even more humbling as we had a light breeze just as the flag reached full-height.

And as Taps was played we heard a "21 Gun Salute"

The programs was a great experience. I am glad that I was finally able to make it.

Later on Monday I had an experience that left me completely humbled. I ran into one of our local veterans and as I shook his hand I told him: "Thanks for your service." He looked at me and said: "I hope because of my service, you will never have to serve." With tears in the corners of my eyes I thanked him again.

The next installment of "This is my hometown" ties in perfectly to my wonderful memorial day.

The Juab County Veteran's Memorial

I might be a bit partial to this memorial. But, I think it is absolutely amazing.

You can't walk through the memorial without being a little moved; especially if you take a moment to read the names etched into the granite. The names you read are the names of people that you love: friends, neighbors, aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents.

I hope all of you that are from the local area have had the opportunity to walk through the Veteran's Memorial and the adjacent Rose Garden. For those of you not in the immediate area, may you one day have the opportunity to visit a memorial local to you.
